Hours are the easy part. Orblite works out which commitments are actually building something and which ones are just filling Saturdays.

Log it the day you do it

The single most common way students lose service hours is reconstructing them in April from memory. Nobody remembers whether the food-bank shift in November was three hours or four, and a coordinator asked to verify a year-old estimate will round down.

Two minutes on the day, with the date and what you actually did, is worth more than an afternoon of archaeology in the spring. That is the whole reason this exists as a tracker rather than a calculator.

What to write in the description

Write what you did, not what the organization does. "Sorted and boxed donations, ran the intake desk Saturday mornings" is verifiable and specific. "Volunteered at food bank" is neither, and it is the version that gets queried.

The specificity has a second use later. When you write an activities list or an essay, this log is the raw material — and a year of one-line specifics is far easier to write from than a total.

Hours are a floor, not a case

Most service requirements are a graduation box: a number your school needs to see. Meeting it is necessary and it is not interesting. Nobody reading an application has ever been moved by a total.

What reads is duration and depth — the same organization for two years, a role that grew, something that visibly would not have happened without you. Forty hours across one commitment says more than a hundred spread across eight. If you are choosing where to put a Saturday, that is the thing to optimise, and the total will follow.

Common questions

How many volunteer hours do colleges want?
There is no number, and any site that gives you one is inventing it. Colleges do not have an hours threshold — they read what you did and for how long. Your school's graduation requirement is a real number; the college one is not.
Do colleges verify volunteer hours?
Rarely and selectively, but they do sometimes contact an organization, and a fabricated claim discovered after admission is grounds for rescinding an offer. Log what actually happened.
Can I count hours from a paid job or a family business?
Paid work is not service, but it is worth listing separately — colleges take a part-time job seriously, particularly when it explains why someone has fewer activities. Unpaid work for a family business is a grey area your school's coordinator should rule on.
Is my log saved if I close the tab?
Yes, in your own browser. It is not sent to us and there is no account. Clearing your browser data clears it, so download the CSV once you have hours worth keeping.
